September Meeting

Our September meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 17th at Actual Brewing Company at 7:00pm. The address is 655 N. James Road, Columbus, OH 43219-1837. Look forward to seeing everyone.

The Club Only competiiton style this month is Light Hybrid so if you have a beer that fits into BJCP category 6 and would like to enter, bring a sample.

Cowtown Cup

Did you brew the Big Brew brown ale recipe at CBC?  Did you brew the Big Brew recipe on your own?  Are you a love-hungry drifter with the drive it takes to be America’s next sweetheart?  If you answered “yes” to at least two of those three questions, you need to enter the Cowtown Cup!

This is a competition open to anyone who started with the Big Brew brown ale recipe.  The entry fee is only $1, and a prize will be awarded to the winning brewer.  Entrants will need to bring 3 bottles (per Matt’s request; I think this is a low-cost way for him to stock up on beer) to his place on the day of the competition.

This goes down Saturday, June 23 at Matt’s place (609 Dennison Ave Columbus OH 43215) starting at 9 am.  There will be a BBQ and a general good time, so bring some beer and food to share.  If you’re interested, contact Matt Milholen via email at mailto:matt.milholen@gmail.com.

Upcoming Events

The May meeting will be our last formal meeting before taking the summer off.  However, we have a lot of events coming up; check back here for more information…

Big Brew for National Homebrew Day – Saturday, May 5th at the Columbus Brewing Company brewery (behind the restaurant).  Participants (open to any homebrewer, not just SODZ members) show up and get wort for a batch of American brown ale.  CBC will mash, collect, and distribute wort; participants provide hops and yeast.  You don’t have to follow the recipe listed; feel free to alter it as you see fit.  Bring everything you need to boil and chill your wort.  Water will be provided, but you’ll need your own chiller.  SODZ is providing a hog roast; bring a side dish to share.

May SODZ Meeting — Monday, May 14th, 7 pm at the Elevator Brewery

Iron Kettle Homebrew Challenge — June 2nd at Chateau Le France.  See Dan France or Vic Gonzales for details

Digfest in Grandview — June 16th at The Grandview Yard.  SODZ will be doing a brewing demonstration and have a booth to talk to people about homebrewing.  If you’re interested in drinking beer and talking to homebrewers, contact me and I’ll add you to the list.  There will also be a homebrewing competition which will be judged that afternoon; winners will be announced at the event.  The competition is free to enter; you can register here.

Ohio State Fair Homebrewing Competition — Start planning and brewing now.  The registration deadline is June 20th; entries are due July 9-13th

SODZ Summer Picnic — TBD in July at the France compound in St Louisville.  More info coming soon…

Stir Plate Raffle

This could be yours if you come to the January meeting! I’m talking about the stir plate and the flask, anyway (the mixer stays). We’re raffling off a brand new stir plate, 2 liter flask, and two stir bars – everything you need to step up your yeast management. We’ll be selling tickets for $1.00 a piece, so bring a little extra cash and take your brewing to the next level.
