The March meeting has been cancelled. We’ll try to move the planned history of the club talk to a future meeting.
March Meeting
Please join us for our next club meeting this Monday, March 16th, at 7 p.m.
Ill Mannered Brewing has graciously offered to host us. They’re located at 38 Grace Dr, Powell, OH 43065.
During this meeting, we’ll again be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of SODZ with a history of the club by Bonni and Mark Katona.
We’ll do a quick introduction for any new members in attendance, hear about current goings-on at Ill Mannered, talk about upcoming club meeting, events and competitions. We’ll talk about the National Homebrew Convention, give an update on our barrel project, and conduct officer elections for the upcoming year.
We’ll also update everyone on the brewer of the year standings. (If you are last month’s winner, please attend with the mash paddle so it can be awarded to the new winner.)
The club competition for March is Sessionable. This is a wide open category where the only criteria is that you make a beer 4% ABV or less. Although “sessionable” is technically anything less than 5%, what’s the fun in that?
April is Hopapalooza – for any beer over 40 IBUs. May is Fizzy Yellow Beers – Light Lagers, Pilsners, and Light Hybrids.
If there are any further details to share between now and then, we’ll update via the club Facebook page.
See you there.
Beer For Boobs VIII
We realize that not everyone might have seen all this information in various posts on Facebook, so we’re sending out this quick recap.
The Beer 4 Boobs homebrew competition was held on November 16, 2019 at Combustion Brewery in Pickerington.
We had 218 entries judged between the morning and afternoon sessions.
SODZ raised a record amount this year. SODZ donated over $2,000 to the Beer 4 Boobs breast cancer research charity. For 2019, the charity raised $15,000 nationwide. We’re proud to have done our part.
We very much appreciate the participation of everyone who entered, sponsored, volunteered or participated in some way. The silent auction and raffle ticket sales were a huge help in increasing the overall size of our donation to the Beer 4 Boobs charity.
Combustion Brewery & Taproom in Pickerington and Brewmaster Keith Jackson graciously hosted us and worked hard to make the competition work smoothly.
The 2018 winner, a Belgian Dark Strong brewed by Richard Sheppard, was brewed in time for release on the day of the 2019 competition.
This year’s winner, a Pear Berliner Weisse brewed by Richard Sheppard, will be brewed for release at the 2020 competition.

SODZ Christmas Party
It’s that time of year again! The club Christmas party will be this coming Monday, December 16th at 7:00pm.
Carey and Mike are again graciously welcoming the club to the brewery for the evening. Lineage Brewing Company is located at 2971 N High St, Columbus, OH 43202.
This event is limited to current members and their +1s. All in attendance must be must be 21 or older, no exceptions.
Dinner is a potluck where the club provides the main course (Yabo’s Tacos) and members each provide a side or desert.
The Dirty Santa gift exchange works as follows: you bring a large format (750ml or 22oz bomber) bottle of commercial beer (approx. $10 value and above) and bring it inside a gift bag. One person starts by taking a bag off the table that’s not theirs and this continues until everyone has a gift. Basically it’s a white elephant gift exchange (including swapping or previously opened gifts), but instead of gifting junk you are giving and receiving beer. The only requirements for this are that you buy a quality beer and bring it concealed in a gift bag.
The December Club Competition’s theme is ‘Tis the Season. This can be any Christmas/Winter Speciality (21B), Belgian Specialty (16E), Wood Aged (22C), or other Speciality (23). Basically, convince us it’s Christmas beer.

The club competition for November is Smoke and Roast. This could be any dark lager, porter, stout, Belgian specialty (include roasted malt), or any smoke-flavored beer.
If there are any further details to share between now and then, we’ll update via the club Facebook page.
See you there.
Learn to Homebrew Day & Collaboration Beer Release
This Saturday November 2nd, thousands of people across the country will participate in Learn To Homebrew Day. Come join members of SODZ and HOPS as we enjoy a relaxed brew day together.
Graciously, the Ohio State Buckeye football team has agreed not to play this weekend in order to accommodate our event.
Nocterra Brewing in Powell (41 Depot St., Powell, Ohio 43065) has graciously agreed to host the event for this year.
If you’re there to brew, just hang out and ask questions – all are welcome. Plan to be set up and ready to brew around 9:00am.
We’ll also be rolling out our California Common collaboration with Nocterra that day – “Something In Common”. Several of our members canned the beer on Tuesday, and it’ll be available for both can and draft sales.
