Anheuser Busch Brewery Tour

Forty-eight SODZ members went on the brewery tour and all I can say is “WOW”. The sheer size of this place is awe-inspiring. Everyone was very impressed not only with the scale but the attention to quality and detail. The mashtun’s are bigger than my house and they have six of them! Like they said, they do the exact same thing us homebrewers do, just on a bigger scale. If you ever get a chance to go on this tour jump on it.  A big thanks to Tyler Hunter and his crew  for taking time out of their busy day, giving us the tour and being gracious hosts.

SODZ Picnic Wrap Up

Twenty-five SODZ members made it out to the Glass Rooster in Sunbury, OH. We smoked four pork shoulders and 4 kegs of beer on tap and about 10 or so growlers.  Thanks to everyone that shared their beer and food. Special thanks to Will and Rachel Shiel for setting this up and extra special thanks to Rachel’s aunt Susie for allowing us to use their property and facilities.

Iron Kettle 2015

When

Saturday June 13th, 9am
Sign up ends June 9th.

Where

Vic Gonzales’s House
Westerville, Oh

Address will be emailed to those who signup.

What

If you’ve seen the Iron Chef, then you understand the premise: you will be given a special, secret ingredient that you must use, but how you use it is up to you. Each team will be given the same ingredients kit to review, decide on a style, formulate a recipe, and brew the beer. You need not use all ingredients but MUST use the special ingredient and be sure to showcase it.

Brewers will need to arrive a little before 9am to get set up. At 9am, kits will be passed out and you can start formulating a recipe based on your ingredients. If your team is brewing a 10 gallon batch then be sure to tell the Iron Kettle organizers so that they can be sure to have two kits for you.

Before brewing, each team must give a recipe sheet to the organizers. On it you will name your style, ingredients, hop schedule and any special notes. If you are splitting your batch and using different yeasts and/or dry hopping, list your intent for each of the beers in the notes. If you elect to deviate from your recipe while brewing, see the organizers to update your sheet. Brewers generally will take some time to review their ingredients and submit their recipes with the expectation that brewing will start by 10 or 11am.

This is a fun event to do in teams of two or more brewers. It’s also a chance for a brewer to introduce the hobby to someone who has shown interest in homebrewing.

Last of all rules are subject to change so don’t surprised if someone moved your cheese.

Beers will be judged at the summer picnic for bragging rights.

Kits

The kits will be all grain kits (no extract) and will include enough malt, hops and special ingredient to make a 5 gallon batch.

Yeast

Please bring 2 yeast strains for each kit. If you are brewing with a partner you can have up to 2 kits and 4 yeast strains. If a team is brewing 10 gallons and will divide the beer into two fermenters, which then will be taken home to ferment separately, each brewer is permitted (but not obligated) to use independent yeast strains. This may lead to some discussion on the team regarding what to brew based upon what the two members brought, but each of the brewers must state what yeast strain will be used prior to brewing. You are not required to pitch the yeast on-site, but be honest about what strain you will use at home. You may bring (and use) O2 or a fish pump for aeration.

Water

Do not bring your own water.

You will receive Westerville (Hap Cremean) water.

Do not bring your own water.

Lisa White of White Labs to do Q&A at SODZ Beer for Boobs

Time is running out.

The entry deadline for the fourth annual Beer for Boobs competition is this Sunday, October 26th. All entries must be registered in the database by that date. Please ship your entries to arrive by Friday, October 31st. Gentiles has agreed to be a drop off location for entries, so if you are unable to attend, you may drop off your entries there by Oct. 31st.

Even if you plan to volunteer and are able to get your entries in early, this will help the morning run smoother.

Entries may be registered at: http://beerforboobs.sodz.org/

The competition will be held on November 8th at Weasel Boy Brewing Co. in Zanesville, OH. Weasel Boy will choose a beer from the best of show table to brew as a Pro Am entry in the 2015 Great American Beer Festival!

We need judges and stewards! It takes many volunteers to make an event successful and we can not do it without your generous time commitment. As an added incentive, volunteers may bring their entries the morning of the competition.

Judges and stewards may register at the same web site: http://beerforboobs.sodz.org/

This year we will have a special guest in attendance. Lisa White, founder of Beer for Boobs and vice president of White Labs will be in attendance! We are planning a discussion and Q&A session following the competition on Saturday evening. More details will be available as plans are finalized.

All proceeds from this event are donated to Beer for Boobs, in support of cancer research organizations. See http://www.beerforboobs.org/ for more details.

A discounted rate is available at the Baymont Inn and Suites. Please contact the hotel directly at (740) 454-9332 to receive the special rate. Ask for the Weasel Boy rate. Do not book on line.

Pints for Prostates

SODZ has decided to promote a fund-raiser for Pints For Prostates, by sponsoring the spring Maibock tapping at Gordon Biersch. The tapping event will be Thursday, April 17th. The tapping will follow the usual format from Gordon Biersch, running from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with a special tapping from their keg at 6:30 PM.

Pints for Prostates is a national grassroots organization that uses the universal language of beer to reach men with an important message about having regular health screenings and early detection by making appearances at beer events across the country. They also support the US TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, as they support, educate and advocate for men with prostate cancer and their families. They also support the Prostate Conditions Education Council, which organizes free health screening clinics across the country.

The organization was founded by Rick Lyke in 2008, who is a beer writer and prostate cancer survivor. Pints for Prostates works with healthcare providers, organizations and suppliers, brewers, restaurants, retail stores, beer industry groups and other interested parties to bring the message of prostate health to men.

Gordon Biersch has supported Pints for Prostates in several of their brewpubs across the country, and they are very happy to see our local Gordon Biersch partner with SODZ to join in this promotion.
We plan to raise money by selling raffle tickets, having a 50-50 drawing, and having promotional materials available from Pints for Prostates at a special table. Gordon Biersch will also be contributing to this effort as well. A planning committee has been put together for the event. Tom Rees, Jeff Tayner and Geoff Towne have graciously offered their time to help plan the event. We will need the involvement of others during the event, and we are counting on every SODZ member to be a part of this special evening. Please consider bringing family members, and also potential new members.

Stewart Miller, the general manager of the Columbus Gordon Biersch, and Keith Jackson, brewmaster, are very excited about partnering with SODZ for this event. It will be up to us to make this Maibock tapping one of the biggest Gordon Biersch has ever hosted.
